'FEEL' FILM FEEDBACK

After a different group seeing our film this is what feedback we got:

Title sequence - too simple, white on black
Framing - cut off faces
Handheld - shaky/messy
Focus - in and out (unintentional)
Continuity error 2.41 180degrees and at 3.39
Slow
Costume?
Good lighting
Music worked
Good range of angles
Nice Colour

After showing our film to everyone this is what we got back from everyone:

Could not tell if the shakiness at the beginning was on purpose.
Music was good
Colour balance was good
Day 4 - the paste needs to be picked up
The area where Max slept, the shoes and clothes do not need be to shot and the 2nd shot of him sleeping is not needed either
Maybe with the titles for Day 1,2,3,4,5,6 maybe they could have be 1,2,5,10 or not even needed
Good transition of night to day where Max runs off into the distance
There was no music credits for Mike and Dave
Nice edit
Story is clear and it worked
More tine in music, needed to be lifted a bit near the end.

YESTERDAYS SEMINAR //

In yesterdays seminar we were asked to come up with 5 questions we would ask anyone about their development in whatever their subject area. A few of our groups questions didn't make sense as we were aiming them at people in our subject. So we ended up with 4 decent ones, that we then had to ask other people to find out about their development, whilst also answering their questions. My 4 questions were:

1. Since starting (University), how do you think you have improved?

2. What is your most effective research method?

3. How have your thoughts changed about the course since starting (University)?

4. What background did you come from and how would you compare it to now?

I know they aren't the best questions in the world, but I was quite interested in what I found out from the people I had asked them to. Like what kind of creative backgrounds they had come from and what their inspirations were.

But I also realised something about my own inspirations from their questions. When I was growing up I was obsessed with Disney and Pixar films; Pinocchio, Lion King, Toy Story etc. I always thought it was the animation that inspired and amazed me most, and I've always had this urge and passion to become an animator. But what I realised, is that the story behind these animated films is what amazed me most. The animation is still amazing, but the ideas behind these films are absolutely brilliant, the effort put into the script is phenomenal, they put years of work into the story which is what makes these films so good, and they are appealing to a wide range of people across all ages.

This then made me think more about the pathway I wanted to go down, because I have been debating between 'Moving Image' and 'Virtual Environments' for a few months now, but was more in favour of Virtual Environments as this included animation. But now I'm completely stumped as I have realised I love film as much as I love animation, with such inspiring directors as: Guy Ritchie, Spike Jonez, Michel Gondry, Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton, John Lassater, James Cameron, and the list goes on. These are all storytellers as well as film makers, capturing their unique interpretations of stories, written by them or not.

When we were set the Moving Image brief of creating a film from a script that was wrote for us, I enjoyed visualing the scenes and sketching out how I saw them in my head. For that project I was the sound-man so I didn't really have any creative control over the shots, but if I would have, the film we made wouldn't look anything like what it does now. I'm not saying it isn't good the way it is, it's just that my interpretation was a lot different. This project had inspired me to want to create my own film, and had pushed me towards the Moving Image pathway, and from this have decided that I will chose Moving Image but also attend the Virtual Environments lectures and seminars as this is still a huge interest to me as I grew up aspiring to do this.

Also I have decided that my visual essay will be based on my journey so far, and will be about my decision between Moving Image and Virtual Environments.

FILM FEEDBACK!!

We got some feedback from our film last week, and most people gave it a good response. But my intitial thoughts on the film are skeptical, as there are a few things I would change personally. But what do I know, I'm just the soundman!
There are few shots and scenes in the film that last too long, but we're working on that. I need to record more sounds for the film such as fighting sounds, water running etc etc, just little things to make it all gel together.
Overall though the film is coming together, but we might need to re-shoot most of the film as the tape kind of broke and had to be selotaped back together! Fun times! Because we can learn from what we've already done and make it even better!

LAST WEEKS LECTURE // INSPIRATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT!!

Last weeks lecture was slightly more packed than usuall as there were also students from other subjects involved. As one of the subjects was Theatre Design, I learnt how much our two subjects are very similar, but with just hundreds of years of technique and technology in between. I can't quite remember what the other subject was but im pretty sure it was in the same boat.

It was interesting to hear other peoples views and how passionately they felt about their subjects as we do for ours. And it made me, and I hope most of us multimedia bods in there appreciate the different mediums and come of our high horses of technology and CGI, to appreciate the original basis of our subject. Forget our HD cameras, Blue Ray and 1080p films for just a moment and realise that without the old days of live theatre and good old novel books we wouldn't be in the world of 3D cinema that we are today. Then when we're making games, films or whatever we decide to venture into, to know that we need a good old story behind it, otherwise it's just another shit film that we seen. I escpecially don't want my work to be looked upon like this, but looked upon as inspiration to others, just like the works of many brilliant directors; Guy Ritchie, John Lasseter, Martin Scorsese, Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, and to do what their works have done for me.

These are just a few of the people I look at as inspiration when developing my own projects. Depending on the project, there are many options that I can get influence from, whether these are Graphic Designers & Typographers; Paul Rand, Herb Lubalin, Jonathan Barnbrook, Ian Swift.
Design Agencies/Animation Studios/Production Companies; Designers Republic, Intro, Fallon, Pixar, Passion Pictures, Saatchi & Saatchi, Gorgeous.
Or Photographers; Matt Stuart, Martin Parr, Magnum (Agency).
Even just Design websites/magazine; Behance, Creative Review.

This is the final pixilation, my interpretation of our groups photos. I decided to make a cheesy movie trailer and I think it works really well with the music, it just adds that extra tension and exitement to it. Hope you enjoy :D... Feedback please!

This is our groups final edited one shot. Its not the best, and there are definitely things that could be changed to improve it a whole lot! But we give it a shot and it's not all that bad. We tried to go for the cheesy/comedy factor and I think we may have pulled it off just a little. Hope you enjoy!!

The Development Process

The development process to me is the stage you go through inbetween having an idea, and the making that idea a final peice. Development is an important stage when it comes to designing anything: whether it is a package design, or even an essay. This process narrows down and eliminates unnecessary areas of your design, to deliver just the best and key ideas which eventually become your final product.

Personally I find that sketchbooks are a great way of expressing your ideas as you can annotate your work as you progress. You can also draw up multiple concept designs and refine any rough edges of your idea, which all push you towards finalising it. When the sketchbook is complete it almost tells a story of how you achieved your idea, and presents the tasks and problems you faced in doing so.

An example of amazing sketchbook development is by a Graphic Designer named Johnny Hardstaff. His sketchbooks are packed out with barely any space left on each page, all with drawings, annotations and research; which is also another form of developing your idea, by looking at what has been and can be done. He repeats his incredibly detailed drawings over and over to ensure he gets the best results, showing a lot of commitment to his development, which is key to the success of his work.

Overall I think the development process is vital if you want to get the best out of your project, it just pushes them initial ideas on and makes them happen. Ideas may not work without this process as you cannot refine the problems you could come across. They still may not work even if you use the development process effectively. But this is still the path you take to find out, so you can then develop your idea into something else.

PIXILATION DRAFT!!

This is the first atempt at our pixilation brief!
As a group we decided to shoot it portrait as we agreed it looked better, not realising that it would'nt work properly this way as it doesn't fit the video dimensions. But I've put it together anyway to see what it looks like and to see how smooth it runs so that when we re-shoot, we will know if we need any more inbetween shots to make it that extra bit smoother!

After watching it, I started to think about making my pixelation similar to this, but I won't completely rip it off, if I do!

MICHEL GONDRY!!

Michel Gondry is one of my favourite directors, and his work is so inspiring! Him along Chris Cunningham, Spike Jonze, Guy Richie, Jonathan Glazer and many more, are absolutely brilliant!!

But I have chose Michel Gondry this time because of the music videos he has done for The White Stripes involving animation/pixelation, which is extremely relevant to both my project at the moment and my tutorial 'homework'. These videos are ''The White Stripes - Fell In Love With A Girl'' & ''The White Stripes - The Hardest Button To Button''. I really love these, especially the one below, it is definitely one of my favourite music video of all time!

He has also directed another video; ''The Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar'' which relates to the one shot project we are yet to start!

I have been working on my template for my interactive narrative, and this is the final draft of my template! All that needs doing now is inserting the images for each frame. I will be hand drawing my charecter holding the chord positions on the guitar, as my game is a guitar playing game...

Competitions!!

I've been browsing the internet for some multimedia & design based competitions to enter into for both fun and experience, to get a chance to see how well your work can do, and this will give you some confidence in what you do and boost your morale.

Inspiration For First Brief!!

This image is by artist James Jean, and this is one of my favourite drawings by him. I chose to look at this as I may use this style as inspiration to draw my animated charecter, for the interactive narrative game that we have been set to create for our first brief!!

First Brief!!

The first real brief we have been given is to create an interactive narrative, which is an interactive story, kind of like a game, where the audience (or player) make decisions in the 'game' that affect what happens next! We have to first come up with a storyline or an idea, and then figure what decisions the audience/player could make to create the interaction.
My initial idea is to create a music based game, where there is an animated charecter playing chords on the guitar! And each time you press a chord letter on the keyboard, eg. A for A chord, the animated charecter plays that chord. I will record the sounds for each chord sound on my guitar and then use them as the audio for my game. The basic narrative of the game is that the player can play any song on the guitar they like, using the notes I will record, allowing them the play the guitar without actually having to learn! PS. DON'T STEAL MY IDEA!! :D

Whiteboard Animation!

For this exercise we had to create a white board animation, in a group of about 5-6 people, each taking turns drawing and photographing the individual frames.
I was really exited when I heard we were doing this exercise, and I was kind of dissapointed I was assigned to the pinhole exercise first! And even though I didnt actually draw anything, Ive already had experience doing animation as it is an area I am extremely interested in, and have done a good few small projects for, when I was in college! I also look forward to learning more about this subject as the course progresses!

Pinhole Photography!

The pinhole camera exercise was really interesting. We made a camera with more definition than the latest slr cameras in the shops today, just by using a can, black card, and some tape! We had to cut the top off the can, and then make a light tight lid out of card and tape so that no light would be exposed to the photographic paper we had to place inside. We also had to make a tiny hole in the can where the light could come through, and the photo could be taken with 8 seconds of exposure to the light.
I really enjoyed learning how to photograph, the original way! Even though my photo never worked, process you have to go through to get the final shot was great and really made me realise how much we take cameras for granted nowadays.
